“___~ We need more of the jars filled up out here.” My grandpa calls out from where he sat behind the counter.
“Alright! Coming.” I hurry out from the storage area, fixing my apron with one hand, while carrying sweets in the other. I fill the nearly empty jars with new treats and watch all the little kids jump in joy, readying to fill their small plastic bags with them. I finish up then go back into the storage room. The days here are long since the shop hasn’t been doing well. It’s worrisome but we learn to push through it. I turn on my skates and head into the kitchen for a while.
I let out a pleased sigh and look at the finished cookies. These will look nice on the counter out there. Well, let’s find out if I’m right. I pick up the tray and head back out to the main room of the shop. The sound of my roller-skates on the floor caught grandpa’s attention.
“Oh look at you! Making cookies like always! What a sweetie~” He grins a jolly grin, chuckling slighty.
“Of course grandpa!” I giggle setting them on top of the counter and turn to check the candy jars. But I spot a little girl peeking at the cookies on the counter. With a swift glance around the store, I notice she’s the only one in here. With her mom of course but the only little one. So I snatch a cookie from the plate and skate over carefully and hand her the treat. Her large eyes light up with glee as she thanks me many times taking the cookie from me. The mom thanked me as well and they left the store.
“Oui what a day.” He mumbles leaning back in his chair. “___, can you be a dear and take this last hour? I have to talk with your grandma.” I nod and go behind the counter. He pats my head and walks to the back room where granny was watching TV. I sit in the chair and tap my fingers to the glass counter. The days have been getting harder for my grandpa. This was a lucky day since many kids came in but most of the time no one shows up. This place used to be a hot spot but now all those kids and teens have grown up and are now adults and with jobs. They have kids of their own but they are still too busy to stop by. It also doesn’t help, that grandpa is retiring soon so then he can’t keep the shop paid for. I sigh a long breath letting my ears catch the sound of my sobbing grandma. The muffled ‘It’ll be ok’s’ echo in my mind. It’s not going to be fine. If he loses this shop he loses his dreams and hopes too. And this was going to be my shop too. I was going to work here and earn my tiny pay. Then buy it from them and run it myself! But I know that can’t happen now. Not unless I can come up with fifteen thousand dollars to completely buy this place form the people who are letting us rent it, and keep it filled with happy kids. I choke back a soft sob and sit straight. I can’t just cry. That’ll help no one.
I’m suddenly startled but the movement of a person outside of the shop. But I relax when I notice it’s just another teenager looking for a snack. I wave with a smile hoping it will draw them in, but they just turn their heels and run away. I raise a brow, slightly shocked by the exit and slump back into the seat.
“I’m ugly!!” I dramatically say swinging my arm over my face and lay against the counter, then laugh. “Just another passerby who isn’t interested.” I say to myself and go back to waiting.
Twenty minutes later the bell on the door jingles and I sit up right away, but frown deeply when I see who it is.
“Ah~ Miss ___~ Look at you working the counter like a big girl~” He grins a large salty grin with pure hate in his eyes.
    “Daddy’s-boy.” I roll my eyes.
“Oh come now~ Show some respect.” He hissed that word respect through clenched teeth.
“Oh Sorry. ‘MR’. Daddy’s-boy.” He loses his fake grin as fast as he was able to force it. He glares at me, leaning over the counter.
“Listen here runt. No matter how much sass you give me, my father will still close you down. And this ugly little place will become a nice fancy liquor shop.” I frown even deeper.
“But you can’t do that! Kids love this place! And it’s the only shop that sells kid friendly things! You will make so many of them sad! Plus theirs already an alcohol shop just down the street!” He laughs.
“Hahaha. You see darling, I don’t care if I upset the little kitties. I’m here to please the parents. The dads who enjoy a little drink once and a while. And PLUS I own that shop too.” I wanted to spit in his face. But I wouldn’t, even if he was on fire! I wanted to reach over and force my fingers into his eyes.
I wanted to kick him where the sun don’t shine. But I hold myself back. I hate this guy with all the burning passion within me, but I don’t need to start something with a grown man. Even though he’s as strong as a marshmallow. This man would throw kittens and puppies into a cold river if it meant he would get what he wanted.
“Grandp-” He quickly reached over and silenced me.
“Don’t get that old man involved. I just need to talk to you. I was hoping you’d just go ahead and sigh this for him. It’s been needing it for a while and he’s forgotten.” He sets a piece of paper in front of me with another unpleasant grin. I scan the paper, before crumpling it up and throwing it in his face. It said it was for sighing the store off to the Norman’s. I wasn’t doing that.
“You little rat! How dare you!?” He grips my shirt and pulls me to him. “I’ll ruin you all.”
“And I’ll call the police filing a pedophile.” He smirks and glares down at me.
“Then shall we make it worthwhile?” I sharply intake before bringing my skate up to his face and hearing a satisfying crunch. Then judging by the blood splattered on the wheels of my skate, I broke his nose.
“Did I make that worth your while? Get out of my shop!!” I yell and watch him hobble out clenching his face.
“___? What’s going on?” Grandpa asks stepping out with grandma leaning on his shoulder.
“It was Daddy’s-boy again.” He raises a brow. “Norman grandpa.” My grandmother gasps and hides her face in his shoulder.
“No. Where is he now? What did he want? Are you ok?” I furrow my brows and shake my head.
“He’s gone now, he wants the shop like always, and I’m alright, thank you.” He sighs a deep breath and nods. With a pat to my head he dismisses me to head home and so I do.
I kick up the rubble of my driveway taking my time to go inside. I climb up the side of my house and check to see if my window was locked. It wasn’t which meant my friend had snuck in. I slowly raise the window and watch as they dig through my closet.
“Lucy….” I say raising a brow at her. She screams slightly before falling to her knees and bows her head.
“I wasn’t doing anything! Don’t hate me!!” She whines then lays on her back. “PLEEEAAASSSEEE DON’T HAAAATTEEE MEEEEEE” I let out a long sigh and step completely into the room.
“Lucy I beg you to shut up.” I look at her and she stops, then looks at me, before whaling again.
“YOU THINK I STOLE SOMETHING AND YOU’RE GOING TO YELL AT MEEEEEE! I JUST WANTED TO BARROW ONE OF YOUR JACKETSSSSS!!!!” I facepalm and shake my head. I walk over, lift her up and pinch her face.
“I beg you, to shut, up.” She takes a deep breath and nods. “Which one did you want?” She sniffles.
“T-Th-The blue o-one….” I reach into my already opened closet and grab the clothing item.
“Here. Just try not to rip it.” She claps her hands together quickly with a large grin, then snatches the jacket and hugs me tightly.
“THANK YOU THANK YOU THANK YOU!” She jumps up and down then lays on my bed.
“So! I’m heading out with Ryan tonight~!” I roll my eyes and leer at her.
“So you’re with Ryan again huh? I thought you moved on to Jackson?” She groans.
“Nooooo I don’t really like Jackie! I like Ryan more!” Again I toss my eyes at her words and sit on my desk chair.
“How about you ___? When are you going to get a boyfriend?” I glance back at her and give a sarcastic smile.
“I’ll get a boyfriend, when you tell me who in school likes me! Sound like a deal?” I smile at her with a sour grin. She groans. I shake my head and turn around and stare at my computer, then back at Lucy.
“Oh! I gotta get going!! Thanks again for letting me borrow this ___~! Bye-bye bestie~!” I chuckle at her hyper self and wave as she darts off. I check the time the stand from my chair. Time for a shower then bed.
I lay in bed and stare at the ceiling. I can’t let Norman take grandpa’s shop….So what if we don’t have great business! We still get it none the lesss! Plus this is the middle of the school year! No one has time to spend thirty minutes in a candy shop! But during the summer we need more than eight different refills at a time! So many people will miss it and be upset…..But how am I going to come up with that much money? It’s not going to just appear out of thin air! ‘Then suddenly a bag full of cash was thrown through the window by a prince on a shiny white horse, then they rode off into the moonlight-’ I think rolling my eyes, as I turn onto my side. But all jokes aside. I have little to no chance to help them out. And that upsets me! If they lose this shop they’ll be on the streets! Well not really. I’d have them live with me, but it would still be nearly impossible to put bread on the table every night. I sigh and roll onto my back and stare at the plan, boring, ceiling once more. I can help…..but how….I’ll just have to wait and find out.
I sit up startled by my alarm clock, but shake it off and stand slowly from my warm bed. I put on a (F/C) button up shirt, and a pair of pants/shorts/skirt and suspenders, since grandpa always wears them. I grab my roller skates, my keys, and my wallet, then head out the door, down the street to the shop. I sadly smile at the ‘closed’ sign, unlock the door and step inside. I walk to the back where my grandparents normally are and knock on the door.
“Ah ___~! Here bright and early as always. Never gets old. Like me.” I laugh and hug grandpa. He tells me to go turn the sign to ‘open’ and wait behind the counter, so I do. The moment I sat in the chair several little ones came running in dragging their parents behind them. I giggle and watch them skip around while the parents chitchatted with each other. But I overheard their conversation.
“Yeah it’s going out of business. Heard it was going to become a liquor shop. Can you believe it?” One mother stated with furrowed brows.
“I know….My nephews will miss this place so much….” I sigh and look down at my shoes. Word is already out. News travels quickly….I reach into my bag and grab my skates, placing them on my feet, then going into the kitchen to bake some more cookies. When I came back grandpa was at the counter and the kids were already gone. I check my watch then sigh. If we don’t get any more customers we’ll have to start turning stuff off….Like the ovens, and then the freezers….We’ll lose so much….I slam my fist against the couther with rage.
“___! What was that about?” I jump realizing what I did and stood back.
“Sorry grandpa….” He shakes his head and dismisses me off somewhere else. I went into the other room and paced the floor.
“You look worried deary. What could be the matter?” Grandma asks walking over.
“The shop! If we don’t get any more customer well have to-” She shook her head with a frown.
“Don’t worry yourself about this dear. We’re doing just fine.” I give her a pained look.
“No, we’re not….Grandma I’ve seen the papers I know what we owe! If business drops any more the shop has to go! And I’m not going to stand back and watch! I have to help! I must! I love this place as much as you do and if I don’t try to do anything, I know I let you and grandpa down.” She lowers her eyes to the ground.
“___, I’m begging you to not talk about this around grandpa…..It will stress him out and make him angry. I will support you but I must warn you.” I smile and nod. I walk over and hug her before stepping back out into the main area of the shop. I glance at the door and spot a familiar figure standing there. It was the person from yesterday! I look over near grandpa and he nudges his head to invite them in. I slowly walk towards the door with a smile but they back up and hurry off. I frown, disappointed I scared them off again, but I was able to tell he was male this time.
“What was that about? He obviously looked like he wanted to come in!” Grandpa says raising a brow. I shrug and sit next to him behind the counter and wait as the day goes by slowly.
“___!” I look up and spot Lucy prancing into the shop next to Ryan. I smile and wave as she runs over near the lollipops. Ryan walks over and strikes up a conversation.
“So how’s the shop doing?” I frown and look up at him. “Oh sorry….I forgot….Um….Ha!” He reaches over and grabs a couple candy bars. “I’ll take these.” I furrow my brows with a gentle smile and ring up the sweets, along with a few lollipops Lucy threw onto the counter.
“So! You know that guy Taylor?” Lucy grins a sneaky grin.
“No. I know what you’re about to say. All I have is no. Whatever it is. I refuse.” She drops her head in defeat then collects the suckers for her purse.
They stay awhile before Lucy wanted to get home. I stay behind and wait, like always but no one comes in. However while packing up the figure returned. I stare at him and it seems he stares back for the longest time. I then go back to what I was doing, choosing not to make him run away. The bell on the door rings indicating it was opened so I look over and find a gloved hand reaching over to the candies in the window. I blink confused, but then realize what he was doing.
“What the hell do you think you’re doing!!” I yell at him and he removes his hand. The door shuts and he flees, leaving stuff behind on the floor. After completely packing I walk over and inspect the dropped item. It was money, along with the candy he was reaching for. Oops…..Now I just feel bad. He was going to pay for it but I scared him away again. I’m so dumb sometimes….I take the money and shove it into my pocket. If he comes back I’ll just give it to him. If I get the chance…..Maybe I should work on my social skills….I shake my head then pick up my bag. Grandpa said to take tomorrow off, but it’s the weekend and I won’t be doing anything anyways so I might as well come here.
I walk down the sidewalk off in space wanting to figure out the best way to get the money. But I feel like that’s all I think about…..Well it is…..I have to do this- ok. Enough of the worrying! I have to think about something else! I smack my hand to my face. Why can’t anything be easy?
I round the corner to my house, and unlock the door. Lucy was in my kitchen looking for snacks while Ryan sat near the T.V looking for a movie.
“___’s home~!” I roll my tired eyes and lazily slink up to my room. “Hey were you going???” I shut the door and fall onto my bed.
I awake to the sounds of police cars driving by and Lucy calling out to me from behind the door.
“What do you want?” I growl slowly sitting up.
“Someone robbed the candy store!!” I fling myself out of bed, suddenly wide awake and I wobble down the stairs and to the front door. Not caring the slightest that I was in my PJ’s I started at full tilt to the shop.
It was true…..Right before my (E/C) eyes there was police tape, cars, and men/women. My grandma was sobbing on a bench in front of the shop while grandpa was inside.
“What happened?” I ask sitting down next to her.
“Gone….Almost everything- Gone!” I furrow my brows and wrap my arms around her. Who would do this to a little candy shop in danger of going out of business? Was it Norman? I mean I know he hates us but really? Would he really do this? I don’t wanna point fingers but really who else wanted us gone? Was it that guy that kept stopping by? I rack my brain but nothing stands out. I stand from the bench and head into the shop to see what happened. The jars and stands were bashed in, but the register was untouched. I raise a brow looking up at broken items then at grandpa. His eyes were cast down while the police speak. I decided to stay for the whole day and clean. There wasn’t much the police could do at this time so I was allowed.
The end of the day came and I gathered the tin containers of candy I salvaged, ready to head out. The grandparents were already at my house so I just had to lock up. I walk down the sidewalk to my house when a sudden creep shot up my spine. I froze in place trying to figure out where it came from. My eyes moved around the area in front of me, before landing on a pair of large, round, orange eyes. However after a moment or two of staring they disappeared. My eyes widen but I start walking again, even though my brain didn’t want me to. I again stop in my tracks but because the eyes where in the alley in front of me. They were on the other side of the street before….How did they move so fast- I became still in my breathing as I notice the figure walking slowly towards me. The side of figure hits the street lamp and I saw the ‘eyes’ were just goggles….He stares my way as I stare right back. This guy is in a gray hoodie over his brown hair, and a face mask with a ‘smile’ on it. I break the gaze for a moment to eye the jars in my arms. If this is the guy who wanted the candy before then maybe I could just….
I set one of the jars in front of me and slowly go to the other side of the road. I let out my breath and continue my way to my house. I look behind me to see nothing. Glad that moment didn’t end the way I thought it was going to.
